Andrey Rublev continued his pursuit of a first title in 2026 with a convincing victory over Lorenzo Sonego at the Barcelona Open.

After his straight-sets win against Mariano Navone in round one, Rublev earned another flawless result in his match with Sonego, beating the Italian 6-2, 6-3.

The Russian has not yet managed to secure a tour-level crown this season, having suffered near-misses in Hong Kong, Doha and Dubai.

Now in Barcelona, however, with Carlos Alcaraz‘s withdrawal, Rublev has a great opportunity to capture a trophy at the ATP 500 event.

En route to silverware in the Spanish capital, the 28-year-old set a record nobody in tennis history could match, which lasted less than half an hour.

Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev make history at the Barcelona Open

With his triumph, Rublev booked his place in a 33rd ATP 500 quarterfinal, a tally greater than everyone else since the inception of the format in 2009.

He had been tied with the previous joint record-holders, Marin Cilic and Alexander Zverev, since making the final four at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Rublev was the outright leader for less than 30 minutes, though, as Zverev won his second-round match at the Munich Open shortly after to increase his ATP 500 quarterfinal total to 33 as well.

Rafael Nadal trails in joint-fourth in the all-time list, along with his compatriot David Ferrer, as well as Stefanos Tsitsipas, all of whom made 29 semifinals

The Barcelona Open is the third ATP 500 tournament Rublev has managed to reach the quarterfinals at this year.

As well as his run in Dubai, Rublev made it to the semifinals of the Qatar Open to kick-start his Middle East swing.

Andrey Rublev confirmed for Estoril tournament in July

Rublev has been confirmed for the Estoril Open, a clay-court tournament set to get underway in July.

He made his debut at the 2017 edition of the ATP 250 competition back in 2017, but has not featured there ever since.

That year, Rublev failed to make it through qualifying, having won one match against Sam Groth before falling to American Bjorn Fratangelo.

Rublev has 17 ATP Tour-level singles titles to his name, and will hope to add to his tally at the Estoril Open.
