Alexander Zverev confirms what he plans to do ahead of the ATP Finals after suffering an injury at the Paris Masters

Alexander Zverev’s title defence at the Paris Masters ended in a heavy defeat to Jannik Sinner.

A day after finally snapping his losing streak against Daniil Medvedev, Zverev was dominated by Sinner in straight sets, losing 6-0, 6-1.

The German was not at the races at all in his clash with the world number two, but it was clear that he was also struggling physically on court.

Zverev‘s schedule has been full on recently, having made deep runs in both Vienna and Paris, and he also suffered an injury scare during his lengthy three-set match with Medvedev.

Following his defeat to Sinner, the world number three issued a fitness update and discussed his plans ahead of the ATP Finals.

In an interview with Sky Sports after the match, Zverev confirmed he played against Sinner with a sore ankle.

He explained: “Unfortunately, it swelled up a lot yesterday after the match [with Medvedev].

“But to be honest, I mean against Jannik, if you’re not 100% and if you’re not playing at your absolute best, then you simply don’t stand a chance, and he showed that today.

“Of course, I couldn’t move 100%. I couldn’t really push off on my serve either, which is obviously very, very important for me against him. But overall, if you’re not at 100%, you don’t stand a chance against him.”

The ATP Finals, which Zverev has qualified for, start on the ninth of November in Turin, which gives him a week to recover.

“I’ll probably fly to Munich to see my doctor who did the surgery on my ankle,” said the 28-year-old.

“I’ll look into it with him and see what it is and if we can do anything about it. Maybe we can make an injection, and then I’ll come to Turin at some point.”

Zverev has featured at the ATP Finals seven times throughout his career, and has managed to win the year-end tournament twice.

In his second appearance at the event, he beat Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and final, respectively, to hoist the title.

Three years later, he triumphed once again, emerging victorious at the 2021 ATP Finals after beating Medvedev in the championship match.

Since 2017, Zverev has only failed to qualify for the competition once, which came during the 2022 season, mainly due to injuries.

Last season, Zverev reached the semifinals in Turin before falling to Taylor Fritz in a decisive third-set tiebreak.

This year, he will make his eighth appearance at the ATP Finals, matching the tally of three-time major champion Andy Murray.
