Dominic Thiem is set to bring the curtain down on his fantastic career at the Vienna ATP 500 next month.

Thiem will hang up his racket after his hometown tournament, having lost his fight with an ongoing wrist injury.

His final Grand Slam appearance ended in early heartbreak, with US Open wildcard Thiem handed a very tough round first meeting with Ben Shelton.

The American emerged victorious 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with Novak Djokovic praising Thiem after his New York farewell.

Thiem certainly has a strong connection to the US Open, having lifted the prestigious trophy at Flushing Meadows in 2020.

Alexander Zverev confirmed for Dominic Thiem’s farewell tournament

That victory came after three successive Grand Slam finals defeats, with two coming against Rafael Nadal at the French Open.

The other came against Djokovic in Australia, before Thiem finally broke his duck against Alexander Zverev in New York.

A reunion is potentially on the cards next month in Vienna, with Zverev among the star names confirmed for the event, as per Jose Morgado.

He is the number one seed at the competition, with fellow top-10 players Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz and Grigor Dimitrov also set to take part.

Taylor Fritz to be joined by Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe in Austria

Wildcard Thiem, who turned 31 earlier this month, will undoubtedly be spurred on by his home supporters in Austria.

But he will be up against it from the very start, with a long list of other high-profile players also lining out at the Vienna ATP 500.

Americans Tommy Paul, Frances Tiafoe and Sebastian Korda have all been confirmed, along with Lorenzo Musetti and Jack Draper.

Regardless of what happens, however, Thiem will be given the warmest of send-offs, having clinched 17 ATP Tour titles over the years.

The Austrian made it all the way to world number three in 2020, earning the respect of many peers throughout his career.
