Alex Michelsen shares what Carlos Alcaraz did while playing doubles at the Laver Cup which completely stunned him

Alex Michelsen made his Laver Cup debut in 2025 and met Carlos Alcaraz twice in doubles.

After losing his opening singles match against Jakub Mensik, Michelsen returned alongside Taylor Fritz to take on the Czech star and Alcaraz in the doubles.

The American duo lost in straight sets, as Alcaraz played some incredible tennis to give Team Europe a 3-1 lead.

Team World subsequently turned things around and led their European rivals 9-3, when Michelsen played Alcaraz in doubles again on the Sunday.

Unfortunately for the American, he was on the losing side once more, as Alcaraz and Casper Ruud beat him and Reilly Opelka, 7-6, 6-1.

Michelsen got his hands on the trophy when Fritz scored the all-important win over Alexander Zverev later in the day, but hasn’t forgotten just how good Alcaraz was in San Francisco.

Appearing as a guest on the ‘Nothing Major’ podcast, Michelsen gave his verdict on Alcaraz’s performances at the Laver Cup.

“I watched a little bit of the [Taylor] Fritz vs Carlos [Alcaraz] match, and Fritz was just red-lining when I was watching. He was playing sick. I didn’t really watch too much of the second set,” he said.

“But I watched Carlos play against [Francisco] Cerundolo the next day, and the guy was just hitting the c— out of the ball, and he makes everything look easy. And he’s so fast!

“When I was playing him in doubles, I thought for sure it was a put-away ball. I was already fist-pumping, and I was like dude. This guy is a joke! I would agree [he is the fastest player of all time].”

Alcaraz played some incredible tennis in San Francisco, improving his Laver Cup record to 6-2.

‘I don’t think anyone believes anymore’ – Alex Michelsen on playing Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

Since the beginning of the 2024 season, Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have won all eight available Grand Slam titles.

As the pair continue to dominate, some have questioned whether anyone can stop them.

Michelsen says he and the rest of the ATP Tour have been asking the very same question.

“I think in three out of five, he and [Jannik] Sinner are just really tough. Two out of three, you get a day when you are playing sick, and it’s a lot easier to beat them, but three out of five it’s tough,” he said.

“Whenever someone says ‘I think I can win the US Open’, everyone just bursts out laughing. There is nothing us poor guys can do against those guys as of right now.

“I don’t think anyone genuinely believes anymore, except maybe Novak [Djokovic]. But I mean, he is not getting any younger, but we will see.”

Behind Alcaraz and Sinner, Djokovic has been the most successful player at Grand Slams this year, reaching all four semifinals.

But even he has struggled against the world number one and two, losing to Sinner at the French Open and Wimbledon, and to Alcaraz in New York.

Only time will tell if he or anyone else can challenge the pair at the four majors in 2026, but you certainly won’t want to miss any of the action.

The 2026 Australian Open is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 12.
