Alex Eala has provided one of the more unique stories of the 2026 WTA season so far.

The 20-year-old, who booked her place in the third round of the Miami Open after beating Laura Siegemund on Thursday, has enjoyed the most lively support of anyone in tennis this year.

At several tournaments Eala has appeared at this year, Filipino fans have filled the stands and showered her with encouragement.

Who is your favorite player – Alexandra Eala or Coco Gauff?

Let us know why in the comments!

Though she is ranked 29th in the world, the 2025 Miami Open semifinalist is perhaps the biggest draw on the WTA Tour right now.

The support for her is unwavering, however, it is perhaps surprising to see Filipino fans so invested in tennis, considering the lack of stars produced from the country.

Alex Eala says the Philippines is ‘still quite far’ in youth development

Eala is often breaking records by becoming the first Filipino player to complete a feat, and is the only player from her country ranked inside the top 100.

Following her win over Siegemund, Eala said there is a lot of work to do in youth development in the Philippines.

In her post-match press conference, she said: “As of right now, from what I know of the level and the resources in terms of coaching and knowledge in the Philippines, I frankly think it’s still quite far.

“I think we still have a gap to close. I still think there is a lot to learn for us but I do believe that we are going in the right direction.”

Asked about the increasing number of Asian stars in tennis, Eala replied: “I think it’s such a good thing for tennis that Asian players are coming up and we are coming out on fire.

“I think representation is really important and I think we are in an era right now where a lot of different demographics are being represented in the Tour.

“I think that’s a great thing. I remember growing up that I really looked up to Li Na because she was Asian and, of course, because she was just such a great competitor. I think it could be really great for the next generation.”

Alex Eala’s next opponent at the 2026 Miami Open

Eala is aiming to defend a lot of ranking points at the Miami Open following her run to the semifinals last year.

The then-teenager burst onto the scene at the WTA 1000 event in 2025 by advancing to the final four before falling to Jessica Pegula.

After her nearly three-and-a-half-hour victory over Siegemund, Eala will take on Magda Linette, who just knocked out second seed Iga Swiatek.

Eala and Linette have faced each other three times before, with the head-to-head currently 2-1 in favour of the latter.
