Alex de Minaur will perhaps be more relieved than most players on the ATP Tour after Jannik Sinner was handed a three-month ban.

De Minaur lost the Rotterdam Open final to Carlos Alcaraz earlier this month, a year after losing the same final to Sinner.

Sinner also beat De Minaur en route to his Australian Open crown last month, taking his head-to-head record over the Australian to 10-0.

De Minaur has since moved on to the Qatar Open, but Sinner is absent after accepting a suspension for two failed drugs tests in 2024.

Matteo Berrettini continues to support Sinner after news of his ban, which sees him ruled out of action until May 4.

Alex de Minaur wants next guilty player to have same option as Jannik Sinner

It is a ban that has seemingly divided the tennis world, with ATP number eight De Minaur now sharing his thoughts with BB Tennis.

“It’s tough because we have seen something which has never happened,” he said. “In the past it has always been a year or two years. It has always been much larger.

“It is something we have never seen and I guess if someone else, or the next person is in a similar position, I hope we see the same option being allowed.”

Alexei Popyrin laments ‘tough situation’ for players after Jannik Sinner ban

Sinner has seemingly been let off the hook rather easily for want of a better phrase, primarily because he will only miss three months.

But secondly, the world number one can return in time for the French Open, having just triumphed at the Australian Open.

It does, of course, set a dangerous precedent moving forward, with the Italian having been able to reach an agreement with WADA.

Knowing the exact ins and outs of that deal is impossible, but one certainty is that things could have been much, much worse for Sinner.

De Minaur’s fellow Australian Alexei Popyrin alluded to that closed-door policy in his verdict, with the world number 27 saying: “I think everything was shut down and closed off and no information was given.

“I think there are rules and rules are rules. A three-month ban is what it is at the end of the day. We will see him back in Rome but I think it is a little bit of a tough situation. I think especially for a lot of the players also.”
