Alex de Minaur has recorded another strong season and will finish 2025 inside the top ten for a second consecutive year.
Since January, the Australian has made two Grand Slam quarterfinal runs and picked up another ATP title.
De Minaur is one of the many stars in men’s tennis looking to close the gap on Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, both of whom have dominated on tour this season.
The Spaniard and the Italian have won a combined 13 titles this year, while splitting all four Grand Slams between them for the second year in a row.
Following De Minaur’s win against Taylor Fritz at the ATP Finals, he was asked how close he thinks he now is to the level of the ‘new two’.

In his post-match press conference, the 26-year-old said: “I feel like I’ve gained a lot of momentum recently in these types of matches [against Sinner and Alcaraz]
“I’ve gone from a stage where, hey, you go out there, you compete, but you’re not really getting a lot of chances. I do feel like I’m getting my chances, right?

“Even here against Carlos in the first set, 5-3 up, 5-4, two serves, I’m putting myself in pretty good positions.”
In his first match at the ATP Finals, De Minaur lost to Alcaraz 7-6, 6-2.
“Jannik, I played a good match against him in Beijing. In Vienna, he got the better of me, as well. But I do feel like I’m heading in the right direction, right? I’m gaining momentum.
“I do think that they feel it, as well. As we’ve seen, Taylor [Fritz] played an incredible match against Carlos and was very close to stealing that match.
“I do think we’re going to be knocking on the door, right? They’ve played at an incredibly high level for an extended period of time.
“We are just going to keep on getting better and wait for our opportunity. At least I’m hoping they’re not going to show up every single day of the year.”

De Minaur has beaten neither Alcaraz nor Sinner at tour-level events throughout his career.
Against Alcaraz, he is 0-5, having lost to him on three separate occasions during the 2025 ATP season.

Sinner leads De Minaur 12-0 in their head-to-head, with the four-time Grand Slam champion dominating in their rivalry.
Since meeting for the first time at the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2019, Sinner has dropped just two sets against De Minaur.
De Minaur came close to defeating him at the China Open earlier this year, but could not get over the line after taking the second set to force a decider.
