Alex de Minaur is one of tennis’ most affable individuals, but he remains some way off the top two players on the ATP Tour.
In fact, he arguably suffers more than anyone when tasked with trying to topple them, having never recorded a single victory against Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner.
Despite that, he is still a hard-working individual, and still has time on his side, given he is just 26 years old.
In fact, speaking on a recent podcast, Alex de Minaur has actually shared exactly what he’s been working on in the off-season in an effort to bridge that gap.
Alex de Minaur reveals what he’s been working on in his off-season
Chatting with Greg Rusedski on Off Court with Greg, he revealed the areas of his game that he felt were most in need of an overhaul.
After all, as he put it, the ‘ultimate goal’ in men’s tennis right now is to somehow try and stop Alcaraz and Sinner from continuing to dominate every big event.
Who will join Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in a new ‘big three’?
De Minaur admitted: “The ultimate goals in men’s tennis are to try and reach those two players now. They have been dominating the sport for the last couple of years.
“I am in pre-season now, and I’m just getting ready. We have got certain areas that are quite technical that I want to work on and improve.
“The serve is always a work in progress. That is something I would put a lot of hours into.
“I am also looking to put a bit of speed on my average rally ball. We are seeing with Carlos and Jannik that their average rally ball speed is extremely high, so we are working to get to that.
“We probably have one session in the morning, which is drills with another player, and then you go back out and try and work on tweaks with your coach.”
Alex de Minaur’s dreadful head-to-head records vs Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
De Minaur admitted he’s been impressed with Sinner all throughout 2025 and beyond, but knows he must switch the narrative sooner rather than later in their head-to-head.
After all, across all of their meetings, the Australian has yet to record a single victory; he has lost 13 straight matches against the former world number one.
What does Alex de Minaur need to change to challenge Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner?
And his record against Alcaraz is no better, having still never beaten him, but just played him fewer times.
In total, De Minaur has played 18 matches against Alcaraz and Sinner combined, losing all of them. If he has any ambitions of ever winning a Grand Slam title, he desperately needs to start shifting the narrative and claiming some scalps against them.
