It was the Serb’s earliest US Open exit since 2006, and he will now have to wait until January to reignite his quest for a record-breaking 25th major title.
Emma Navarro and Coco Gauff, who both made it through after three-set triumphs, were joined by compatriot Frances Tiafoe after he prevailed over Ben Shelton in a five-set epic that lived up to the pre-match hype.

The 2024 edition US Open continues to deliver the goods, and Saturday promises to be no different, with some mouthwatering matchups in store.
After Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shocking exit at the hands of unseeded Botic van de Zandschulp, Jack Draper is now presented with a brilliant opportunity to progress further into the second week. The 22-year-old will not have to face a seeded player until the quarter-final stage at the earliest.
On the women’s side, Jessica Pegula has announced herself as a contender for the title after blitzing through her opening rounds, continuing the impressive form she produced in the lead-up events in Toronto and Cincinnati.
The American is on a collision course with Iga Swiatek to meet in the quarter-finals.

How to watch day six of the US Open in the USA
Fans in the United States can watch the US Open live on ESPN and the Tennis Channel throughout the tournament.
Broadcasts on day five will run on the Tennis Channel from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. before ESPN takes over from 11 a.m. through to 11 p.m.
ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPN+ will all provide tennis coverage today. Additionally, ESPN Deportes will show the action with Spanish commentary.
