Plenty of twists and turns have been taking place at the Italian Open, where many top ATP and WTA players are in action.

Novak Djokovic has opted to skip the Italian Open, but ATP number one Jannik Sinner is back after his three-month suspension.

Sinner clinched a 22nd consecutive win after emerging victorious from his opener, beating Mariano Navone 6-3, 6-4.

His WTA counterpart Aryna Sabalenka has also progressed, but defending champion Iga Swiatek has crashed out early.

Her ATP equivalent Alexander Zverev has avoided such an upset so far, with the German winning his second round match 6-2, 6-1 against Camilo Ugo Carabelli.

Nicolas Jarry set for Wimbledon qualifying after Italian Open exit

But failing to make it beyond that stage was Nicolas Jarry, who lost last year’s Italian Open final to Zverev.

The Chilean fell 7-6(7-4), 6-3 to 17th seed Francisco Cerundolo, having lost the 2024 final 6-4, 7-5 to third seed Zverev.

But that is not where Jarry’s troubles will end, with the 29-year-old set to drop outside the top 140 in the new world rankings, meaning he will need to play qualifying at Wimbledon.

The French Open is up next in the 2025 Grand Slam calendar, starting later this month, with Wimbledon getting underway in late June.

What ATP Tour titles has Nicolas Jarry won?

Jarry reached a career-high ranking of 16th this time last year, but the Chilean currently occupies 53rd spot.

In the live ATP rankings, however, that number plummets a huge 93 places, which will put him all the way down in 146th.

Jarry enjoyed his best Grand Slam year in 2023, where he produced his best finishes at all four major tournaments.

The Chilean also won two of his three ATP Tour titles that year, but now looks set to have a huge mountain to climb in order to get back to his best.
