The tennis world received more shocking news yesterday, as the ATP and WTA Tour were hit with a monumental lawsuit.

As tennis stars prepared for the 2025 Miami Open, they received news of action that could change the sport forever.

The Professional Tennis Players Association [PTPA] filed a series of legal actions against the sport’s governing bodies, as they push for reform.

A press release from the PTPA claimed that the legal actions were ‘backed overwhelmingly’ by the top 250 players in men’s and women’s tennis, including a ‘majority’ of the top 20.

The statement focused on seven key areas, which they believe have wrongfully been ignored by the key figures at the top of tennis.

It remains to be seen what the outcome of the legal action will be, although it has certainly made people take notice of the PTPA.

Who are the PTPA?

The PTPA is an independent organization founded in 2019 by players who had previously been members of the ATP Player’s Council.

They represent singles players ranked inside the world’s top 500 and doubles players ranked inside the top 200.

What does the PTPA do?

As a relatively new organization, the PTPA has yet to cause real change in tennis but has explained its key principles on several occasions.

The PTPA have said that they are dedicated to advancing and safeguarding the rights of professional men’s and women’s tennis players throughout their careers.

They are particularly focused on increasing ‘transparency’ in tennis, as was explained by co-founder Vasek Pospisil during a podcast in 2020.

“We basically don’t have any information and the tournaments don’t need to provide anything and don’t need to be transparent at all,” he said.

“That’s not a business partnership especially when we’re the product, where people come in and pay money to watch the players play.”

The goal of the PTPA is said to provide players with a ‘self-governance structure’ away from the ATP and WTA Tour, but notes they don’t intend to ‘replace’ either organization.

Why are Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios involved in the PTPA?

24-time Major champion Novak Djokovic co-founded the PTPA alongside Pospisil in 2019 and serves as a member of the Executive Committee.

The Serb has publicly voiced his concerns about the state of the sport, particularly focusing on the limited number of players who can earn a living in tennis.

“The amount of players that live from this sport that is the third most global sport, is around 400,” he said.

“We’re talking about men, women singles, men, women doubles, mixed doubles, so all the professional players around the world, you have less than 500 players that live from this sport.

“Probably, let’s say from 250th, 300th to 500th player, they probably can’t even afford to have a physio or fitness coach, or some of them even a tennis coach because it’s too costly, it’s too expensive.”

Djokovic chose not to attach his name to the lawsuit, although another big name did, as Nick Kyrgios expressed his willingness for change.

The Australian shared his thoughts following the announcement on Tuesday, explaining his involvement in the PTPA.

“I felt like people knew that something was going on behind the scenes for a long time and I think that myself, [Vasek] Pospisil, [Novak] Djokovic, all wanted to do something like this for the future of tennis,” he said.

“I know players and myself aren’t happy with the structures and everything that’s going on with tennis at the moment.

“I’ve been as involved as I can be with everything that I’ve got going on but this will be a special moment in tennis for sure.

“I think things needed to change so it’s a big day for tennis.”

Kyrgios then detailed several issues he thinks the ATP and WTA Tours have caused, as he looks forward to change.

“We don’t get heard, for instance, we’re using different balls pretty much every week, things that shouldn’t be happening in a professional sport at the top level.

“The ATP has so much power and they don’t have to show anything to anyone and now this is where things like this will have to change, they’ll have to show things and how things operate and that’s when people will realize that things haven’t been done correctly over the last how many years.

“I don’t think players ultimately have been very happy with what they earn on the tour comparatively to other sports, that’s definitely one of the main reasons also.”

Who is the Executive Director of the PTPA?

Since 2022, Ahmad Nassar has held the position of Executive Director within the PTPA, a role similar to the one he held in the NFL between 2009 and 2019.

Nassar has been active on social media in regards to the lawsuit, especially after hearing responses from the ATP and WTA.

The PTPA Executive Director described the ATP Tour’s response as ‘self-serving drivel’, responding to each point they made in a lengthy thread on X.
