Roger Federer is actually on the wrong end of history at the Monte Carlo Masters.
Federer is widely considered one of the greatest of all time, having won 20 Grand Slam titles and been world number one for 310 weeks in his career.
The Swiss achieved success on all surfaces, and Federer was actually the first player to beat Rafael Nadal in a clay court final.
However, Federer’s clay court success did not transition to the Monte Carlo Masters, where he still holds an unwanted record.

Roger Federer has lost the most Monte Carlo Masters finals without winning a title
The Monte Carlo Masters is one of three ATP 1000 level tournaments on clay ahead of the French Open.
Some of the notable champions at the Monte Carlo Masters in its 118 year history include Nadal, Novak Djokovic and 2025 champion Carlos Alcaraz, but Federer is not on the winner’s list.
Will Carlos Alcaraz bounce back by winning the Monte Carlo Masters?
If not, who will win the title?
Federer was unable to surpass the quarterfinals in his first five appearances at the Monte Carlo Masters, but in 2006 he reached the final for the first time.
This is where he would play defending champion Nadal, who would beat Federer 6-2, 6(2)-7, 6-3, 7-6(5) to win the title for a second successive year.

Nadal would continue to be an issue for Federer, beating him in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters again in both 2007 and 2008.
Federer would only make two appearances at the Monte Carlo Masters between 2009 and 2013, before he returned to the final again in 2014.
Nadal was beaten in the quarterfinals that year by David Ferrer, and instead Federer would play his compatriot Stan Wawrinka in the final.
Wawrinka had never won a Masters 1000 title before, but he was able to do so after coming from a set down to beat Federer 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2.
This was Federer’s fourth defeat in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters, as he became the first player to reach this many finals without winning the title.
Federer was only able to reach the quarterfinals in his two final appearances at the tournament, and no other player is yet to reach as many finals as him in Monte Carlo without lifting the trophy.

What is Roger Federer’s career record on clay?
The Monte Carlo Masters is not the only tournament Federer holds this record at, as he has also lost four finals at the Italian Open.
Despite this, Federer has achieved a lot of success on clay in his career, winning a total of 11 titles on the surface.
| Roger Federer on clay | |
| Win-loss Record | 226–71 (76.1%) |
| Titles Won | 11 |
| French Open titles | 1 (2009) |
| Masters 1000 titles | 6 (4xHamburg, 2xMadrid) |
Federer won his sole French Open title in 2009, as he took advantage of Nadal suffering a shock defeat to Robin Soderling, who he beat in the eventual final.
Although he was never able to win either the Monte Carlo Masters or the Italian Open, Federer did manage to win six Masters 1000 titles on clay in Hamburg and Madrid.
Federer would have no doubt achieved much more success on clay if it was not for Nadal, who beat him in 14 of their 16 meetings on the surface.
