Venus and Serena Williams are two of the most recognisable names in sports.

They blazed a trail in professional tennis by achieving plenty of success on court and breaking numerous records in the process.

The sibling duo turned heads with their explosive style of play and iconic fashion trends, and there are very few that can match their longevity in the game.

28 years after making her US Open debut, Venus Williams will compete at Flushing Meadows for the 25th time, and she will open her campaign against Karolina Muchova.

Which players in the US Open draw have faced both Serena and Venus Williams?

Karolina Muchova

Muchova is set to commence her US Open campaign against Williams, who received a wildcard to compete in New York.

This will be the pair’s second meeting, five years after their first match which also took place at Flushing Meadows.

Muchova won that opening round match 6-3, 7-5, and she will aim to replicate that fear against the former world number one next week.

On the other hand, Muchova has played Serena once, also at the US Open. That took place in the third round of the 2019 US Open, and the 43-year-old claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win on the way to Serena reaching the last Grand Slam final of her career.

Sloane Stephens

Sloane Stephens played a combined nine matches against the Williams sisters.

Seven of them came against Serena, and the 31-year-old claimed just one victory, which occurred at the 2013 Australian Open.

Stephens came from a set down to claim victory and reach the first Grand Slam semifinal of her career.

She won both of her encounters against Venus, the last of which took place at the US Open for a spot in the final.

Stephens dominated set one and Venus stormed throughout set two, before Stephens edged a tight third set to advance to the final, where she won her lone major.

Karolina Pliskova

The former WTA world one has a healthy head-to-head record against Venus, after winning three of their four matches.

Williams claimed their first match in 2015 to win the Zhuhai Open, before Pliskova won their meetings at the US Open, WTA Finals and the Cincinnati Open.

Against Serena, Pliskova won two of their four meetings, including their final encounter at the 2019 Australian Open.

The Czech player produced a high level to win an entertaining three-set battle to reach the semifinals at Melbourne Park.

Elina Svitolina

Elina Svitolina’s one and only win from six matches against Serena came at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Williams entered the Rio Games as the defending champion, but Svitolina secured a 6-4, 6-3 victory to continue her quest for a medal and end Serena’s Olympic career in the process.

Svitolina enjoyed more success against Venus. She won four of their matches, including their most recent meeting at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.

In the opening round the Ukrainian beat the five-time champion at the event 6-4, 6-3 to reach the second round.

Maria Sakkari

Maria Sakkari has three matches against Venus under her belt.

Her lone win came in their final meeting at the 2018 San Jose Open, by a 6-4, 7-6 scoreline to reach the semifinals.

The Greek player encountered her younger sister Serena on two occasions in successive tournaments back in 2020.

Sakkari came from a set down to beat Serena at the Cincinnati Open, before the 23-time Grand Slam champion avenged the defeat the very next event, the US Open, in three sets.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands

Mattek-Sands stood across the net from Serena on three occasions, and was unable to defeat her.

She came closest in their final meeting at the 2015 US Open, when Williams was aiming for the calendar Slam.

Mattek-Sands took the first set, before Williams won a tight second set and stormed through the decider to claim an important victory.

While she lost to Venus four times, she did claim one victory against the elder Williams sibling. That came at the 2019 San Jose Open, when Mattek-Sands came from a set down to claim a shock victory.

Sara Errani

It always seemed like a monumental task for Errani to trouble the Williams sisters enough to score a win.

But she managed two against Venus, first at the 2014 US Open. After the first was split with a 6-0 scoreline, Errani won an even final set to claim victory in New York.

She defeated Venus for the second time at the 2021 Australian Open, losing just one game, but Venus still won their head-to-head rivalry 3-2.

But it was a one-sided rivalry against Serena, who won all nine of her matches against Errani during their careers.

The Italian won just two sets across those matches, first at the Dubai Open in 2009 and the 2015 Fed Cup Playoffs.
