Matteo Berrettini has helped Italy win the Davis Cup for a third consecutive year as he continues his impressive record in the event.

Italy were without Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti this year, but still had a strong lineup with Flavio Cobolli and Berrettini as their two singles players.

After beating Pablo Carreno Busta in his final singles match, Berrettini supported Cobolli from the sidelines.

Berrettini has been part of two of Italy’s winning Davis Cup teams, and he has not lost a singles match in six years.

Taylor Fritz is the last player to beat Matteo Berrettini in Davis Cup singles

Prior to 2023, Italy had not won a Davis Cup title for 47 years, with the 1976 triumph the nation’s only previous victory in the competition prior to their recent run.

Berrettini has been a big factor in Italy’s last two Davis Cup title wins, and the former Wimbledon finalist’s victory over Carreno Busta was his 11th consecutive singles victory.

This has included wins over the likes of Joao Fonseca, Borna Coric and Thanasi Kokkinakis, with Berrettini unbeaten in singles this century.

Berrettini has lost one doubles match for Italy since 2020, but he has not lost a singles match since 2019.

The last player to beat Berrettini in Davis Cup singles is current American number one Taylor Fritz, who came from a set down to beat him in 2019.

That is one of only two losses Berrettini has suffered in Davis Cup singles, with Denis Shapovalov also beating him in 2019 in another tight match.

Berrettini has suffered many injury problems in recent years, but the Davis Cup appears to bring the best out of him more than any other tournament.

When was the last time Jannik Sinner lost in Davis Cup singles?

Italy were notably without their best player this year, but Sinner has actually lost a singles match at the Davis Cup more recently than Berrettini.

Sinner has won his last six singles matches at the Davis Cup, with his last defeat in the competition coming back in 2022.

While Berrettini beat Elias Ymer in a Davis Cup Finals Group Stage tie against Sweden, Sinner lost his rubber against his younger brother Mikael Ymer.

Ymer, who also has an unbeaten record against Carlos Alcaraz, beat Sinner, 6-4 3-6 6-3, before Italy secured victory in the doubles.

These two players could not be much further apart now, with Sinner the world number two, while Mikael Ymer is ranked outside the top 600.
