Iga Swiatek is currently trying to claim WTA Finals glory, but right now, her place in the tournament is hanging in the balance.

A stunning performance from a set behind by Elena Rybakina has now left Swiatek needing to beat Amanda Anisimova to progress to the semifinal.

Swiatek rued a big mistake she made in the humbling performance against Rybakina when she managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Swiatek couldn’t draw any motivation from her team, and in taking the final set 6-0, Rybakina became only the fifth player in history to close out a match against Swiatek with a bagel.

The very first to achieve that feat is something of an unknown quantity…

Camila Giorgi was the first player to close out a match with a bagel against Iga Swiatek

Rybakina took Swiatek to the bakery twice in her latest WTA Finals match. First, she restored parity with a breadstick and then forced the Polish performer into an unwanted bagel to close out the match.

The Kazakhstani player has now qualified for the last four and has become the fifth player to close out a match against Swiatek with a bagel.

Giorgi was the 27th seed at the Australian Open in 2019 and faced Swiatek, who came through qualifying, in the second round.

The Italian blew Swiatek away with a 6-2, 6-0 victory before succumbing to Karolina Pliskova in round three.

At the time, it was hard to see what Swiatek would go on and achieve in the game, and it wouldn’t be too long before she was punching way higher than Giorgi in the rankings.

What Camila Giorgi achieved in professional tennis

After turning professional in 2006, Giorgi spent 18 years on the WTA Tour but never made it into the top 25 of the world rankings, achieving a high of 26 in 2018.

When it came to the Grand Slams, the run that sticks in the memory is the 2018 Wimbledon event, where she made the quarterfinals.

Serena Williams beat her in three sets on that occasion, with Giorgi taking the first set and the match proving something of a classic.

Giorgi did make a decent living out of playing tennis and managed to win $6.4 million during her career, with the right-handed performer deciding to call things quits last year.

Given the quality of the players that have closed out matches with 6-0 wins against Swiatek, this is yet another feather in the retired player’s cap as she enjoys her retirement.
