Cristian Garin did not know that he was just one win away from the Wimbledon final in 2022.
Garin has been ranked as high as world number 17, and has won five titles on the ATP Tour in his career.
All five of these titles came on clay, but Garin actually achieved his best Grand Slam result on the grass of Wimbledon.
This came three years ago, but Garin has only won three Grand Slam main draw matches since his breakthrough run.

Cristian Garin was just one win away from reaching the Wimbledon final
Although Garin had been a top 20 player the year prior, he had actually fallen outside the top 40 ahead of Wimbledon in 2022.
Garin had only won two matches on grass on the ATP Tour, but he had enjoyed a breakthrough run to the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2021.
However, it did not seem likely that Garin would be able to do this again after losing both of his grass court matches coming into Wimbledon in 2022.
This was made even less likely when Garin was drawn against 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in the first round.
However, after Berrettini withdrew due to testing positive for Covid-19, Garin’s opponent was changed to lucky loser Elias Ymer.
Who is the best ATP player never to win a Grand Slam title?
Is it Alexander Zverev, Marcelo Rios, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer or maybe even someone else?
Garin would beat two lucky losers to reach the third round of Wimbledon, where he would play 29th seed Jenson Brooksby.
The Chilean would cause an upset against Brooksby, as Garin matched his result at Wimbledon the year prior.
Many expected Garin to fall in the same round once again, especially when Alex de Minaur took a two set lead in their fourth round match.
However, Garin would produce an almighty fightback to beat De Minaur in five sets, which included saving two match points.
Who is the better player – Nick Kyrgios or Alex de Minaur?
Let us know why in the comments below!
Garin’s run would finally come to an end in the quarterfinals, where he would lose to eventual Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios.
What he did not know is that Rafael Nadal would then withdraw from the subsequent semifinal match, which meant that Garin was just one win away from reaching the Wimbledon final.

What has happened to Cristian Garin since reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals?
While this was a huge breakthrough run for Garin, he actually lost ranking points at Wimbledon that year.
Due to a protest from the ATP Tour against Wimbledon after Russian and Belarusian players were banned, no ranking points were on offer at the tournament.
As a result, Garin did not receive the reward he would have earned every other year, and this has had a big impact on him in the following years.
This has been evident in Garin’s Grand Slam results, with the 29-year-old winning just two main draw matches at majors since his run to the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

Garin hit a particularly low point in 2025, as he fell outside the top 200 for the first time since 2018, but he has since made some strides back up the rankings.
After winning four ATP Challenger titles last year, Garin returned to the top 100 and was able to gain direct entry to a Grand Slam for the first time in two years at the 2026 Australian Open.
While Garin is a top 100 player again, he is yet to win a match so far in 2026 after losing his first four matches of the year.
