Jannik Sinner is enjoying another fantastic season on the ATP Tour, although his latest tournament has ended in disappointing fashion.

Sinner retired hurt during his Shanghai Masters meeting with Tallon Griekspoor, with the latter progressing to the round of 16.

Griekspoor was delighted to beat Sinner, who entered the ATP Masters 1000 event on the back of winning the China Open.

Sinner claimed his third title of the season in Beijing earlier this month, having taken his career tally to 21 at the age of 24.

He has come very far in a short space of time, with Sinner first taking to the court on the ATP Tour in 2019.

He is the player who Jannik Sinner beat on his ATP debut in 2019

The Italian made his debut at the ATP 250 Budapest in April 2019, when a 17-year-old Sinner was handed a qualifying wildcard.

Lukas Rosol represented his very first opponent back then, but the Czech ace was forced to retire during their meeting, with Sinner leading 6-2, 3-0 at the time.

Sinner was then beaten 6-3, 6-4 by Yannick Maden in second round qualifying, although he was quickly back in the tournament as a lucky loser.

Replacing the injured Dusan Lajovic, he took on and defeated former junior world number one Mate Valkusz 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.

His roller-coaster run in Hungary was then ended in the second round, when the world number 314 lost 6-3, 6-2 to world number 33 Laslo Djere.

Jannik Sinner beat Lukas Rosol seven years after he shocked Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon

Unlike Sinner, Rosol was well established in 2019 having turned pro in 2004, with an unforgettable win over Rafael Nadal on his CV.

The Czech player, who is now retired, shocked the Spanish legend in the second round of Wimbledon in 2012.

Rosol secured a phenomenal 6-7(9-11), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over the second seed, in what was their first-ever match on the ATP Tour.

Nadal was, however, quick to exact revenge, winning their next four matches to finish with a 4-1 win-loss record in their head-to-head.

Rosol retired from tennis last year at the age of 38, having won two ATP titles as well as reaching a career-high rank of 26.
