Novak Djokovic will still be scratching his head after his shock loss to Joao Fonseca at Roland Garros.

Djokovic was leading Fonseca by two sets in their third round meeting in Paris, but the Brazilian produced a stunning comeback to win the match.

He triumphed 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in one of the matches of the season, securing a fourth round meeting with Casper Ruud at Roland Garros.

Remarkably, it represents just the second time that ATP legend Djokovic has lost a Grand Slam match after winning the first two sets.

Joao Fonseca emulates Jurgen Melzer against Novak Djokovic

Djokovic will be disappointed by his exit, but he boasts an absolutely phenomenal 279-2 record after winning the first two sets at Grand Slams.

Fonseca represents one of those rare defeats, with the Brazilian teenager having followed in the footsteps of Jurgen Melzer.

The Austrian took on Djokovic in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros in 2010, when he produced a stunning comeback.

Melzer emerged victorious 3-6, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(7-3), 6-4 to reach the semifinals, where he was beaten by eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

Which Grand Slam title would you like to see Joao Fonseca win?

Jurgen Melzer’s career ATP record

Melzer recorded his best-ever Grand Slam finish at Roland Garros in 2010, but enjoyed much greater success in doubles on the biggest stage.

He clinched two Grand Slam doubles titles with Philipp Petzschner, along with a mixed doubles title with Iveta Benesova.

Melzer also reached the ATP top 10 in both singles and doubles, claiming five titles in the former and 17 in the latter.

The 1999 Wimbledon boys’ champion retired from tennis on home soil in Vienna in 2021, while last year he captained the Austrian Davis Cup team to the quarterfinals.

Melzer bowed out of the sport after losing in doubles with Alexander Zverev, who is currently looking to win his maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.

With Djokovic losing to Fonseca and top seed Jannik Sinner falling in the second round, Zverev is the Roland Garros favorite.
