Great Britain has produced many top talents over the years, across both men’s and women’s tennis.

Andy Murray represents their most recent icon, with the Scot claiming three Grand Slam titles and reaching world number one in the ATP rankings.

He retired at the 2024 Olympics, with his three career medals at the competition helping him go down as one of the most decorated Olympians in tennis history.

But ahead of him and every other man in that regard is Reginald Doherty, who has four Olympic medals to his name.

Reginald Doherty won four Wimbledon titles and three Olympic gold medals

Doherty clinched gold in doubles and mixed doubles in Paris back in 1900, when he also claimed the bronze medal in singles.

The Briton added another gold medal to his tally eight years later, claiming the top prize in doubles in London in 1908.

Along with that phenomenal success for Great Britain, Doherty hugely impressively secured 14 titles at major level.

He won four successive Wimbledon singles titles from 1897 to 1900, as well as winning eight Wimbledon doubles titles and two doubles titles at the U.S. Nationals.

Doherty’s success didn’t end there, with the legendary player having also been a key member of the British Isles Davis Cup team.

He represented the side from 1902 to 1906, playing a central role as they won four titles after early dominance by the United States.

Of course, Reginald had a partner for his men’s doubles victories, and his came in the form of his brother Laurie Doherty.

Fittingly, both brothers have earned their place in the International Tennis Hall of Fame thanks to such fantastic efforts.

Their success on the same half of the court has since been replicated, with legendary sisters Serena Williams and Venus Williams enjoying stunning careers alongside each other in that regard.
