Italy have claimed complete dominance over the Davis Cup for a third consecutive year.
Italy beat Spain to win the 2025 Davis Cup, with Flavio Cobolli securing victory for his nation after beating Jaume Munar.
This is the first time that Italy have won the title without their top player, with Jannik Sinner electing not to play the Davis Cup Finals this year.
Although they were without both Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, Italy were handed a big upper hand via a current rule that the Davis Cup have which they should consider changing.

The Davis Cup should not give Italy a bye straight to the ‘Final 8’
Italy had not won a Davis Cup title for 47 years until 2023, but they have now won the title three years in a row.
The Davis Cup has been criticised for some of the big changes they have made to the event in recent years, and they have made even more amendments in 2025.
As a result, this has seen more home-and-away ties which many people have wanted, and the Davis Cup Finals location has also changed from Malaga in Spain to Bologna.
These rule changes have also awarded Italy an automatic bye to the ‘Final 8’ of the competition as the hosts.
This means that while Spain had to play a total of four ties to reach the final this year, Italy only had to win two.
Italy’s singles players Matteo Berrettini and Cobolli also did not have to play one top 30 ranked player, and while they fully earned their victory, it does feel as though they are currently being given a real advantage by this rule.
This does not seem like changing anytime soon, as Italy are confirmed to host the Davis Cup Finals until at least 2027.
Is this current Italy team the greatest-ever Davis Cup team?
What was the old Davis Cup Challenge round?
While this is not exactly identical, the current Davis Cup format feels very similar to how the event was prior to 1972.
Between 1904 and 1971, the Davis Cup was won via a Challenge round, which saw the previous years winners receive an automatic bye to play the winner of the rest.
The last time this occurred was in 1971, when defending champions USA won their only tie against Romania to win their third consecutive title.
Will Jannik Sinner regret not playing at the Davis Cup after Italy’s win?
No nation had won the Davis Cup three years in a row until Italy in 2025, and it does not feel insignificant that this is the first year a similar rule has come into place.
Despite the evident issues, this will not be changed in 2026 as Italy are already guaranteed to be in the Davis Cup Finals ‘Final 8’, while Spain receive a bye to the Second Qualifier round as this year’s runners-up.
