The 2009 Wimbledon championships marked Andy Roddick’s third appearance in the final at the All England Club.

Roddick had reached the final stage at Wimbledon twice before, in 2004 and 2005, when both times he met Roger Federer.

In each of those matches, the American had only managed to take one set in total from the Swiss legend, who won the tournament five times in a row from 2003 to 2007.

The former world number one’s last chance at holding the trophy aloft on Centre Court was in 2009, where, despite having been a point away from a two-set lead, Roddick ultimately lost to Federer once again.

It was a crushing defeat for the former US Open champion, who managed to find the words to sum up his feelings on court after the match.

Andy Roddick’s message to the Wimbledon crowd after losing to Roger Federer in the final

Conducting his runner-up interview, former British tennis player Sue Barker said to Roddick: “After a match like that, I just think this sport is so cruel.”

Roddick responded: “No, I’m one of the lucky ones who gets cheered for, so thank you for that [acknowledges crowd].

“I just want to say congratulations to Roger, he’s a true champion and he deserves everything he gets, so well done Roger.”

Barker said: “Well, you threw everything at him.

Roddick replied: “Well, I tried, sorry Pete [Sampras], I tried to hold him off.

“It was an honour playing in front of great champions like Pete, Manolo [Santana], Rod [Laver] and Bjorn [Borg] there.

“I still hope that my name will be up there with theirs as a winner of this tournament. I’ll be back,” promised Roddick.

Andy Roddick’s record at Wimbledon since losing the 2009 final

After three trips to the final in six years, Roddick never made it past the fourth round at Wimbledon after 2009.

The following year, he made it to round four at the event, but lost to Lu Yen-hsun over five sets.

In 2011, after two straight-set victories in his opening round matches, Roddick lost to Feliciano Lopez in the third round.

Roddick’s last Wimbledon campaign came in 2012, where he once again lost in the third round, bowing out to David Ferrer in four sets.

He retired after the US Open that year, announcing he would call it a day on his career on August 30th, the day he turned 30.
